Dr Seuss

This man once said:

Always do what you want, and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.

I wish things were that simple. But I do try, that's what this place is for.

It's something I've been thinking a lot about recently and the more I do the more depressed I get. I definately don't want to turn this blog into one of those emo-depressive rants about how much my life sucks these days. Really I couldn't think of anything to blog about so here I am about to write what is borderine on exactly that.

I'm over it.

I want to be who I am wherever I am without having to restrain myself infront of my family (and some friends.)

This rant is dedicated to those people:

Who am I?

I'm David. Woot! :D

I study Creative Arts. You think it is useless. Big deal. I already have an above average general knowledge. I can solve pretty advanced maths problems. I know more than enough about Biology, Sociolody and Physics to get me through those problems they face in "life". Even Chemistry. I just don't find those subjects as interesting as say Literature. Hell I even know more about our Government and how it works to a point where I know how I should vote. That's good enough for me, why not you?

In Literature (plays, poetry, prose. Even stuff like modern music) you can express yourself, emotions are inflicted (oh shit.) and you can see how the author's values come across. It teaches you History in more ways than you think. You can see the evolution (and devolution) of Language. What seperates humans from other animals? There are primates which have DNA remarkably close to our own. Why do we even HAVE all of these "useful" skills like say Engineering, Chemistry, Medicine, Law and Information Technology and they don't?

It's because we can communicate. We have language. When you have language, you have Literature and you have Creative Arts.

So next time you blow us Arts students (well not so much the media studies ones. I mean the Creative Arts ones) off as slackers or hippies or useless or stupid or whatever; remember this.

We're studying the oldest discorse there is. We're being taught the most complex of human inventions. Something that's been developed over and over again.

Do tribes in Papua New Guinea know Pythagorus' Theorum? They don't need it. However I can guarantee you that they have myths, stories, prayer, music and art. All of these are what make us human. Not your damn wastewater management skills. Or your ability to read seismic charts.

So where am I headed with this study? All this money I'm "throwing away".

An explanation. I'm learning what REALLY keeps Big Ben ticking and the exact truth as to why New York never sleeps.

Oh by the way if that's not good enough for you, I'm learning Japanese too. That's a LANGUAGE. Funny that learning another language is a great, useful idea but studying my own is the biggest waste of time ever.

Oh and the Asian Studies? That's setting me up for a future in the largest part of the world. It's like "Ecomomics" meets "History" meets "Political Studies" meets "Anthropology".
:P

Us Arts majors know most of you won't understand something like this so we just explain our degree with.
"We look pretty" and "We have personality"

Those are just extra bonuses to understanding how and why the world goes around.

Ah hahahahahahhaha AH hahahahaha!!!

Seriously now.

My 5 units in year 12 were Physics, Chemistry, Applicable Maths, Calculus and English Lit.

I go to University and study engineering, and sometimes I feel that not doing engineering was the best decision I never made.

It's no secret that communication is extremely important. The oldest discourse in human history?

Granted... I never thought of it that way though :p

The reason I (occasionaly) take the piss out of arts students is for two reasons.

1. You all do less work than I do. By a factor of 6. Don't argue with me. And I'M slack.

2. I wish I was doing arts so hard, but I know that even if I'd be a mediocre engineer, I'd be an even worse... Whatever the hell I'd end up as after doing arts.

Stick THAT in your blunt and smoke it.
