I will insist, with perfect scars upon my wrists

^
When I am Queen - Jack off Jill (A very angsty masterpiece, one of my recent favs).

Wow blogging this evening is a bit wierd after the large comment I got carried away with on Adamo's. It feels like I'm doing this twice in one day.

Anyway, the major topic of this blog involves music and was inspired by an interesting comment by Ben at Rhys' that he doesn't listen to lyrics songs very much (or something along those lines).

This intrigues me because lyrics are, for me, what makes a song complete. They are the core of creative expression in music, because they require both a tune and a purpose. Being the English and Creative Arts student I've read a lot of poetry within many different medium during the 8 weeks I've been studying this particular major, the 3 years of English and the 2 years of English Literature at school. Poetry exists in its raw form, a "poem" (duh) but a lot of other things are described as "poetic". Plays, for example fit under the genre of "drama" but still contain a lot of symbolism and creative expression in an almost poetic nature. The same holds true for music.

I'll put it this way: music can exist without lyrics and some of it can be really good. Music does not depend on lyrics to be great much like lyrics don't depend on music (ie. spoken verse, especially outside songs). However, a combination of both of these leads to a spectacular surprise, especially for people who love poetry and music so very dearly (including me).

This means that if lyrics are present in a song, it doesn't do the piece any justice to ignore them or not give them equal attention. Much like you can't truly appreciate a song without listening to all its other components too.

Lyrics can set the mood for a song; sadness, joy, pain, whatever. However, this doesn't mean a song with depressing lyrics can't make you feel happy. Music is supposed to be an expression of emotion and/or a source of entertainment, two of my favourite songs; "Don't Speak" and "Strawberry Gashes" are a bit sombre but this doesn't mean they aren't entertaining *cough* Scold me failed her, if only I held on tighter to her pale white skin that with strawberry gashes all over all over. Watch me fault her 'you're living like a disaster' she said 'kill me faster' with strawberry gashes all over all over *cough*

Yeah, I'm a bit of a weirdo and think that that it an (hmm... how do I word this without sounding like some sort of sick fuck) intriguing (?) subject.. hehe. But people who don't think so can still see the beauty in the song. Again, because I'm "weird", I don't nessecary like lyrics about sex and drugs but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate them and I can still become addicted to some songs (Eg, Stuff by Mötley Crüe .etc :P). Obviously we are going to like songs with lyrics we can relate to more because a part of human nature is to try to find links between what we know and something new to make us more comfortable (Most evident in meeting new people where you try to find out what you have in common first and then expand on that).

Relating to songs is an insane experience which sometimes can be freaky. I find this is true for me with No Doubt especially and is one of the reasons why I like them so much. Almost anything that happens to me, or someone I know can be described within one of their songs and if not, then a solution or advice will arise. This won't happen with every song and sometimes it won't happen until something else occurs. Something will happen to you and you will realise that the situation is described in a song perfectly, I can guarantee that you will like the song (at least a little bit, but probably quite a lot) just because of this.

This is why people can actually like R&B "music". They relate to the lyrics, even if it is about stupid topics like smoking lots of weed and shooting people then having 1348631856 hot girls dance for you in provocative outfits.

Woah I'm tired now. This will have to do. I might add more/edit what I've said later. I'm sorry if anything I've said is redundant or contradictory, I haven't checked over it yet so there might be inconsistencies.

See you all later!

It kind of came out wrong when I said that - It's not that I don't listen to them as much, its just I connect more with the power of the 'music', ie: drums, and more so the guitar. Why are Page, Angus, Slash, Hendrix, Allman, Bb King etc.. considered the best guitarists of all time? some, because they were innovationists. But pretty much all of them were able to EXPRESS themselves through the use of their instrument.

They didn't need to use words to say what they felt. THATS what I meant.
I also said what I said because a lot of metal and hard rock songs I listen to, you can barely understand the lyrics, and in my opinion, if you have to 'google' the lyrics to read them, then its hard to connect with the song by just listening to it [Unless the instrumentals are awsome ;)]. So yeah, that's what I was getting at.

It's a tough one to explain. I understand the power lyrics can have, but I just tend to focus on the soulfulness of the 'music' (ie, again, the instrumentals). I'll post more if peeps want more explaining.

I don't think i'd be able to stand listening to Explosions In The Sky if there were lyrics.

Well I did say "music", Andrew... :P

Ben: Fair enough, probably why our favourite bands are so different. My two all time favourite bands have lyrics that are can be eventually understood if you listen to them enough.

Even poppy songs can be hard to understand though; My brother is still convinced that Gwen sings "Spongebob Squarepants" instead of "Sunday Morning". But he sucks at understanding lyrics. Despite it being written in about 1994.

I agree with Ben, but the artists voice is also very important. I wouldn't love Lacuna Coil so bloody much if Cristina didn't have an amazing voice. As for lyrics?

What I love about metal is the way it sounds. When it's gonna be a fun song, it's got all it needs, drums, awesome guitars n shit, fuck yeah. But what about when there's one of those songs where the artist is expressing themselves?

Everything can work together, to make a song you can connect with because of the lyrics, and because of how it sounds. And goddamn, when you have both, that's when you've got yourself a great song.

And Dave, my brother is an RnB fan. He doesn't like what the lyrics say, most of the time. He says it's good to dance to, and that about covers it. He also likes the *ahem* poetry of Curtis Jackson (50 cent to those of us who don't give a fuck).

Um... Yeah, I hope that made sense.

Explosions In The Sky is an instrumental band that can make people cry at shows because the music is so emotional.

And no-ones arguing that they're not, Rob. Just making sure you realise, I dont dislike or ignore lyrics. They just don't have as much an impact on me as the 'music' (in some/most cases).

Andrew:

Yeah well I read that as actual explosions in the actual sky sorry.

Yeah I realise that lots of music doesn't need lyrics and I mentioned that in my blog.

One very very very very very good example is this little thing called Classical music. It hardly ever has lyrics.

lol. wanna hear something odd? and possibly nerdy? what attracts me to a song is the melody of the tune, and how it meshs together with the rest of the music and rythm and shit. meaning an opera singer can be substiuted for a craphics calculator buzzing away to the rest of the band. i fell in love with alot of evanescence stuff because of this, not just lyrics. and don't get me started on Egonomic. but you have! the verses have so much raw energy, combined with the timbre of the blokes voice, awesome. when the song all of a sudden switches from major to minor at the drop of a hat, and the vocals are actually harmonised.... well, the white wee comes out.

guess it comes from playing an instrument with your mouth for too long and basking in the StengelAura since before highschool...
