Got not friends, got no lover

Ahem.

Attention please, everyone!

Battle for the Sun was released QUITE SOME TIME AGO now and a number of you have told me that you still have not purchased it. This is a shame because it is fucking awesome. I was challenged by a few people who were like "is it all shitty like Meds/Sleeping With Ghosts". Now I like those two albums but I can understand what people mean. My answer is it is probably more like Black Market Music, maybe not quite as good, but still awesome.

When I was bored on the plane I decided to write this informative review so that there are no more excuses. The plan was that I would give myself more time to get used to the album so that I wasn't say that every song was perfect. Taken into account how much I fucking love it/them/their style, it is still far from unbiassed, but I tried. Also because I can never take anything seriously, as usual, it is full of jokes.

NB: Placbeofaggy means there is a phrase, generally pretty raging, that you can yell/sing along to over and over again. Examples: "EVERY ME AND EVERY YOU, EVERY MEEEEEEE", "NOOOO ESCAPING GRAAAAAAAAAAAVITY", "SEE YOU AT THE BITTERRRRR END", "BECAUSE I WANT YOUUUUUUUUUUU TOOOOOOO, BECAUSE I WANT YOUUUUU"

Also NB:
I don't give anything 10/10 because there is always SOMETHING in anything that could probably be improved eventually. BMM, for example, is a 9.5/10 album.

Track 1

Kitty Litter:
Heavy, powerful quirky opener. Reminscent of Taste In Men, except less gay (kindof). Placebofag leves are high with "I NEED A CHANGE OF SKIN".
"Love of mine this fortress in our hearts, feels much weaker now we're apart."
It is pretty much perfect.
9.5/10

Track 2

Ashtray Heart:
Kinda cool because back when they were 'underground' they were initially called 'Ashtray Heart' instead of Placebo (Answering the question, yes it is possible to have a more emo name than 'Placebo').

This song is 100% Emo, 100% catchy and 100% Placebofaggy. Like. All it is is Placebofaggy from start to go.
"MY ASHHHHHHHTRAY HEAAAAAAAAAARRRRRT" (this does get boring though)
Probably my least favourite song (NB: I still like it, lots. The album is just amazing)
7/10

Track 3

Battle For The Sun

Jizz. In. My. Pants.
Heavy, intense instrumental (I cannot even count the number of instruments) and driving drums over Brian Molko belting out Placebofaggy lines like a motherfucker.
I would give this song 10/10 but it suffers from 'Brian Molko can write really tacky rhymes that are irritating sometimes' disease.

"DREAAAAAAAAAAM BROTHER, MY KILLERRR, MY LOVERRRRRR"
9.5/10

Track 4

For What It's Worth
Catchy as fuck. 100% Placebo Faggy, but less boring than Ashtray Heart. Also the lyrics are fucking awesome (also emo).

"For what it's worth, I'd tear the sun in three to light up your eyes"
"For what it's worth, fill the cavity - your God shaped hole, tonight"

I would rate it up with Scared of Girls/Nancy Boy/The Bitter End and other classic Placebo catchyfagrock songs.
8/10

Track 5

Devil in the Details
This is a song that is kinda awkward at first, but it pretty much explodes into amazing toward the end. It reminds me of Drag (without being as bad). The verses are a bit "ugh" but the chorus is all "RAWR I'M BRIAN MOLKO AND I INTESELY BELT OUT FUCKING AWESOME PHRASES" Placebofaggy + pretty heavy instruments.

"All of my thoughts and all my wicked ways come back to haunt me, come what may"
7.5/10

Track 6

Bright Lights
Ok WHAT THE FUCK. This is a happy song. What the fuck is a happy song doing on my Placebo record? It is all "I am not a drug addict anymore. I am improving my life." WTF BRIAN? Jokes aside, this song is pretty good. It is happy/fun and Placebofaggy +. Unfortunately/Fortunately "A heart that hurts is a heart that works" is pretty much THE gayest thing Brian Molko has ever said, and he says it a lot in this song.

(seriously though pretty much the only happy Placebo song I can think of?)
8.5/10

Track 7

Speak In Tongues
Um. Amazing. Placebofaggy x325862 Fucking increadible lyrics, intense build up and suddenly Brian is belting his faggy little andro-voice out again.

The start is a bit slowish and boringish (ie. not in a good slow like My Sweet Prince/Peeping Tom) but it is worth it to create the amazing effect.

"We can build a new tomorrow, today. (x3257)"
9/10

Track 8

The Never-Ending Why

Emoo 15 yo girl targeted placebofaggy song. However it is all ROCKBITCHES and is pretty catchy and singalongable. It reminds me (a lot) of how I feel about Drag, Second Sight and One of A Kind. All fucking awesome instrumentally and then Brian ruins it by saying shit like "There's a body in the lake". Fortunately it isn't as cheesey as drag. Or Ashtray Heart (just).

"The atom will implode, the fragile kingdom folds. The tremor becomes a quake and there's a body in the lake." (see it wasn't so bad until those last few words).
7.25/10

Track 9

Julien
No. Fucking. Words.
I just. Can't.
It starts off kinda like Taste in Men, with awesome lyrics over a pretty basic kinda dancey feel. But then it is like. BANG. I'M FUCKING HEAVY. I MAKE BLACKEYED MY BITCH.

Combine this with no cheesey lyrics at all, a pretty awesome instrumental section (including strings) and a massively Placebofaggy finish for like. Old school feel + experience feel + sex + no fucking words.

"JULIEN YOU'RE A SLOW-MOTION SUICIDE.
SLOW-MOTION
SUICIIIIIDE (x39257)"
9.5/10

Track 10

Happy You're Gone
THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THIS HAPPENS AND I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO SAY OR DO.

It reminds me so much of Passive Aggressive and older stuff and none of this let's try to appeal to shitty emo kids and just sing from the heart.

"How many times? Now I can't look you in the eye. MY MY
MY
MY
MY

MY
MY"

I am fucking sad that this song is so short. Otherwise I would break my own rule and 10 it.
9.5/10

Track 11

Breathe Underwater
Ok I can calm down now. Another new-Placebo-style 'this song is awesome but ugh @ the lyrics in the verses'. At least it is heavy and like rock. None of this "holy shit you'll end up in Coldplay/Nickleback territory soon" bullcrap. Probably my favourite out of this sort of style.

"Breathe underwater, I'm coming up for air. I want to see another dawn."
8/10

Track 12

Come Undone
This is a slow, softish kindof intense song. I would murder for it to be a Peeping Tom/Centrefolds/Nacroleptic but they have made it a bit too heavy. Regardless, it is pretty awesome, despite the cringey lyrics which I have come to expect in about 40% of Placebo's songs since SWG.

"so you come undooneeeeeeeeee. you cooooooooooome undoooooooooooone"
8/10

Track 13

Kings of Medicine.
Possibly the best Placebo song ever. It isn't too heavy, which is good because the entire album so far (except like half of Julien and half of Speak in Tongues) as been RAWR GUITARS AND INSTRUMENTS AND AMAZING SHIT. I would pay $20 for the album just to have this song in my iTunes.

"Don't leave me here to pass through time without a map or roadsign. Don't leave me hear my guiding light 'cause I...

I wouldn't know where to begin."
9.5/10

BONUS TRACKS:

You cannot get these in the shops, but they are on my super special awesome pre-order CD and I will send them to you because to me, they complete the album.

Track 14

Unisex
Gaygaygaygaygaygaygaygaygaygaygaygaygaygaygay

Not even in the Placebofaggy (though it is). This song is just plain homo.

However it is cute and reminds me of "I Do". Until Bright Lights came along it would be seen as 'the happiest Placebo get'. However it definately does not fit in with the album (probably why it is a bonus track).

"Do me right by you and I'll do you right by heaven."
8/10

Track 15

Movie On Your Eyelids
Slow/Epic/Finally a Peeping Tom/My Sweet Prince style. However it is not quite on par with these classic jizzsongs. Probably because it is spoken word. Which I guess is kind of cool but, you know, spoken word?

"smoke a bunch of cancer sticks"
8.5/10

There is also a song called "In A Funk" which is awesome but I do not know where I comes from and I haven't listened to it enough.

ALL IN ALL:

The album is very intense, heavy and Placebofaggy (this is good because it means you can go crazy at scream things over and over again). If you didn't like how "pop" SWG was or whatever your complaint was with Meds (too awesome?) then you will not find the same problems with this album. It is pretty much BMM/WYIN without the slow songs kindof feel. That is a shame but still.

An album.

Of intense

Heavy

Instrument driven

Fagrock.

An ALBUM of it.
